Richmond Roadworks: 16 Roads Resurfaced to November

Driving in Richmond upon Thames is shaped by three things that do not change: a river with too few crossings, a South Circular that runs through residential streets in Mortlake and East Sheen, and a council car park map where the price of a long stay varies by more than £10 between two car parks a few hundred yards apart. This page covers the works that are genuinely dated and current, then the parts that stay useful between updates.

Resurfacing: the dated list to November

Richmond Council has published phase 3 of its 2026/2027 carriageway resurfacing programme, which names 16 roads with dates running from 19 August to 20 November 2026. The list below is taken directly from the council’s roadworks and streetworks page, last updated on 7 August 2026.

Two of these matter beyond their own street. Castelnau between Church Road and Washington Road, from 1 to 5 September, is the main road through Barnes and the approach to Hammersmith Bridge. George Street from 13 to 15 October is the heart of Richmond town centre. Both should be assumed to affect buses as well as cars.

The same council page also lists a much longer footway maintenance programme and a pothole and patching programme for 2025/26 with named roads but no dates, so those appear when the crews get to them rather than on a schedule you can plan around.

The bridges, and Hammersmith

Richmond upon Thames sits on both banks of the river, which means almost every cross-borough journey involves a bridge, and the bridges are the constraint.

Hammersmith Bridge remains closed to motor vehicles. It has been shut to traffic since April 2019. Stabilisation work on the cast-iron pedestals let it reopen to pedestrians, cyclists and river traffic, and the Department for Transport has put close to £13 million into the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham for the work, but there is still no funded plan and no date for reopening it to cars and buses. The government reconvened its Hammersmith Bridge taskforce on 30 January 2025 to look again at the options. For Barnes and Castelnau this is the single biggest fact about local driving: traffic that would use Hammersmith is pushed onto Chiswick Bridge and Putney Bridge instead.

The crossings that are open carry the load: Chiswick Bridge and Kew Bridge to the north, Richmond Bridge and Twickenham Bridge in the middle, and Kingston Bridge at the southern end.

Roads to know

• A316 Chertsey Road and Great Chertsey Road, the M3 link, which runs across the borough from Chiswick Bridge through Twickenham to the Hospital Bridge and Apex Corner roundabouts. This is the fast road out and the one most likely to have overnight lane closures.
• A205 South Circular, which enters the borough as Clifford Avenue and Mortlake Road and is the main east-west route through Mortlake, East Sheen and Kew. Because it runs on ordinary streets rather than a purpose-built road, a single set of temporary lights on it backs traffic up quickly.
• A305 Sheen Road and A307 Petersham Road, the local spine from Richmond town centre south towards Kingston.
• A308 Hampton Court Road and A312 Uxbridge Road in the Hampton and Hampton Hill half of the borough.

ULEZ applies everywhere in the borough

Every street in Richmond upon Thames is inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year except Christmas Day, across all London boroughs. If your vehicle does not meet the standards and is not exempt, the charge is £12.50 a day. There is no part of this borough where that does not apply, including the far end of Hampton and the Barnes side of the river.

What parking actually costs

Council car park tariffs in this borough vary far more than most people expect, and the difference is largest exactly where you are most likely to want a long stay.

The practical point for Richmond town centre: Old Deer Park (TW9 2RA) has 285 car bays and charges £21.10 for up to 24 hours, and it is free to park in outside its charging hours of Monday to Saturday 8am to 6.30pm and Sunday and bank holidays 11am to 5pm. The Paradise Road multi-storey (TW9 1SQ), 337 bays, charges £31.60 for a stay over nine hours, which is £10.50 more for the same day in the same town centre. Paradise Road earns some of that back with a cheap evening rate of £4.95 from 6pm to midnight and by being open until midnight seven days a week, which Old Deer Park is not. Note that the Park Lane entrance to Old Deer Park is closed 7.30am to 9.30am Monday to Friday.

In Twickenham, the Arragon Road multi-storey (TW1 3NG) is the big one at 437 bays, £18.25 for over six hours, with a special events tariff of £26.45 that applies on match days at Allianz Stadium. It has a 1.9 metre height restriction and is locked outside Monday to Saturday 7am to midnight and Sunday 9.30am to 6pm.

In Teddington, the three council car parks are all cheap by borough standards: Teddington Pool (TW11 8EZ) tops out at £7.80 for four hours.

All council car parks take pay and display, RingGo or a card, and residents with a RichmondCard get free parking for stays of up to 30 minutes in most of them.

Bushy Park gates close early from 1 September

If you drive through Bushy Park, the Royal Parks have confirmed that the deer cull runs for six weeks from Tuesday 1 September 2026. During that period the vehicle gates are locked each night from 7pm and the pedestrian gates from 10.30pm, with all gates reopening at 8am the next morning. Gates are open as normal on Saturdays and Sundays. Normal hours are pedestrian gates 24/7 and vehicle gates 6.30am to 8pm.

Richmond Park vehicle gates run 7am to 8.30pm, with pedestrian gates open 24 hours. Neither park is a through route worth relying on at a fixed time. Both are free to enter, and what else is worth a visit is on the things to do in Richmond page.

If you are driving in because parking beats the train, it is worth checking the numbers first: the zone, fare and journey time from every station in the borough are set out separately, and a zone 4 daily cap of £12.80 undercuts a day in the Paradise Road multi-storey by a wide margin.
